At the same time bohemian style is finally finding its footing in fashion again, filtering down to the everyday woman on the street (in the most flouncy, folksy and fringe-filled ways possible), a new retro-inspired hair trend is taking off, with Amal Clooney piloting the flight.
Nicknamed “the bell-bottom blowout,” the fresh technique plays on the beloved bouffant styles of the 1970s, minus the wedge chop and shaggy layers. Modeled by Clooney, and crafted by hair artist Dimitris Giannetos, the “bell-bottom,” for the most part, is even-cut with long layers.

Its name comes from its silhouette. Similar to fit-and-flare jeans, the hair is blown straight 80 percent of the way with a subtle bounce and curl at the bottom. According to Margaux Mahoney, marketing director at Drybar, the key to locking the shape is applying volumizing spray on the lower half of the hair. “You want a sleek, curtain-like top so the volume at the bottom stands out,” she said.
