Jason Horne was on his motorboat with his daughter on the evening of July Fourth when he heard screams from a nearby pontoon. Beside it, another boat was flipped over - and three children were trapped underneath.

“They were very frantic,” said Horne, who was celebrating the holiday on Alvarado Park Lake, about 20 minutes from his home in Midlothian, Texas. “They just kept saying, ‘My babies are under there!’”

Horne - a firefighter and medic with the Midlothian Fire Department - turned to Emilie, 12, and told her to stay in their boat. He threw off his hat and sunglasses and dove in. Emilie called 911.
