Google India faces a case in Hyderabad after a few individuals alleged that they became victims of three ‘fraudulent’ apps on its app store, the Play Store. Google, however, asserts that one of the three is verified, while the other was already deleted from the app store. The third, it claims, is a website, not an app.“We have received a few complaints from victims who alleged that they lost money after investing in certain apps that they downloaded from the Play Store. We are investigating this,” a police officer told businessline.Responding to the allegations, Google asserts that only one of the three identified apps was on the Play Store and met all compliance standards. The other two were not compliant and one of those was already suspended from the platform. It claimed that only one app was on Play Store and it complies with Play policies.Within Rules“Google Play strictly prohibits all forms of deception. We investigated this issue as soon as we were alerted, and confirmed that only one app was available on the Play Store. Our reviews reveal that the app complies with Play’s financial services policy,” Google has said in a statement here on Wednesday.“We review valid legal removal requests when notified through the correct legal processes and, where appropriate, we restrict or remove apps in keeping with local laws,” it said.SEBI PartnershipGoogle said it partnered with MHA-I4C and SEBI in 2025 to notify all registered trade exchanges to publish the approved apps list on their websites for public transparency. In March 2026, Google also partnered with SEBI to indicate all approved stock trading apps listed in the Play Store with a verified badge.“Every app undergoes rigorous review, with over 10,000 safety checks run on every app before publishing, and we take immediate action to remove non-compliant apps and ban bad developer accounts,” it said.Published on July 22, 2026
