The third day of the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union State Softball Tournament could bring with it plenty of intrigue and excitement.With the new double-elimination format, several teams will be looking to fight their way back following losses earlier this week. That includes three-time defending Class 3A champion Williamsburg, who will need to top Mount Vernon in back-to-back games to stay alive in pursuit of becoming the first-ever to win four in a row.The top side of all five brackets reached the final stages of elimination play on Tuesday night while the bottom will start with a win-or-go-home game before that victor looks to win twice and reach the finals.Championship games in Class 2A and Class 4A are set for Thursday from Rogers Park in Fort Dodge, with Class 1A, Class 3A and Class 5A taking to the diamond on Friday. The win now sends the Dodgers to a must-win contest vs. Carlisle later in the day.Carlisle knocked off Fort Dodge Tuesday night, and must win just once more over the Dodgers to advance to the finals.In Class 1A, St. Edmond, the other hosts of the week, leads Remsen St. Mary’s in an elimination game, 8-4. Rihanna Myers with a home run and a double, driving in four so far.Southeast Polk Gets Revenge On ValleyDuring the regular season, West Des Moines Valley picked up three victories over Southeast Polk. But each time, the score got closer and closer.Well, this week, it was time for the Rams to turn the corner, as they went 2-0 against the Tigers, eliminating them with a 12-10 victory. Southeast Polk will now take on Ankeny Centennial later today.Williamsburg Stays AliveBacks against the wall once more, Williamsburg came out firing. The three-time defending Class 3A state champions stayed alive with a 6-0 victory over Mount Vernon.Earlier in the week, Mount Vernon claimed a decision vs. Williamsburg, who is chasing history. They could become the first Iowa summer school to win four consecutive state tournaments.St. Edmond Forces Decisive Game In 1AThe “hometown” Gaels put together a miracle comeback, rallying from a five-run deficit in the seventh before besting defending Class 1A state champion Clarksville, 13-11 in 11 innings.Rihanna Myers had a game-tying three-run homer and Baylor Ulrich a solo shot in the seventh, as Myers scored the game-winning run.The Quest For Four Is Still On For WilliamsburgAfter fending off elimination, the Raiders earned their spot in the Class 3A finals against Dubuque Wahlert Catholic with a 9-1 victory over Mount Vernon.Williamsburg topped Mount Vernon twice on Wednesday after falling to them earlier in the tournament. The Raiders, three-time reigning champions, are attempting to become the first Iowa summer school to win four in a row.Carlisle Knocks Off Fort Dodge In 4A-EliminatorThe other “hometown” team, the Dodgers, posted a 7-3 victory vs. Carlisle to set up a second eliminator game between the two top teams in Class 4A.This time around, the Wildcats answered the call, winning 2-0 to advance to the finals where they will face ADM. Carlisle scored a run in the first and one in the fourth, as Mallie Stoner went all seven, allowing just three hits to one of the top hitting teams in the state.Clarksville Back To Defend TitleAfter the loss to St. Edmond in extra innings, the Indians earned their spot in the Class 1A final, 6-5.
