The Communist Party of India (Marxist) on Wednesday criticised the reported remarks of the Chief Justice of India during the hearing of a petition seeking an inquiry into the alleged police assault on students in Delhi. The party also condemned the BJP protest at the Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) office in Vijayawada, which led to clashes, and demanded action against those responsible.In a statement, CPI(M) Andhra Pradesh State Secretary V. Srinivasa Rao said persons holding high constitutional offices should exercise restraint and responsibility while making public observations. Referring to the Supreme Court hearing, he expressed concern over reports that the court declined to view videos of the alleged police action on students and observed that it did not have time to examine the matter. Such remarks, he said, could undermine public confidence in the judiciary. He urged the Supreme Court to admit the petition and order an independent inquiry to ensure justice.Mr. Srinivasa Rao said the student protests across the country had raised important public issues that warranted urgent judicial attention. He also criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for not responding to the protests and demanded the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, contending that it would help ease the situation.The CPI(M) leader also condemned the clashes at the APCC office in Vijayawada and similar incidents reported in Hyderabad and Patna. Alleging that the BJP was suppressing student protests while targeting political opponents, he urged the authorities to take action against those involved in the attack and ensure adequate security for the offices of all political parties.
