When Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan spoke to a group of journalists about the importance of understanding cultural spheres, few expected that a brief reference to Iranian cities would trigger widespread debate across social media.
Addressing Turkey’s youth, Fidan emphasised that understanding one’s cultural and civilisational roots is essential for building the future. Within this framework, he outlined a cultural route beginning in Astara and passing through Tabriz, Ardabil, Urmia, Ray, Isfahan, and Shiraz before reaching its destination. He described this path as a vital cultural geography that the younger generation ought to experience firsthand.
Although the Turkish Foreign Minister went on to mention major cities in Europe, the United States, and other parts of the world to encourage young people to explore diverse global cultures, his specific reference to Iranian cities captured the most attention. Beyond their historic role in Iranian civilisation, these cities also encompass areas with significant Turkish heritage and population centres.
