Members of the Sturmabteilung (Storm Division, SA) and Schutzstaffel (Protection Squadron, SS) tormented their political opponents while elevating themselves to the status of the “Master Race.” Devout believers in the murderous concepts of the “Führer,” the “People,” and “race,” their trail of violence led from the running street battles of the Weimar Republic to the mass murder of millions of European Jews. For the first time, Die ZEIT is providing access to hundreds of thousands of SA and SS personnel files, now searchable by name among membership lists, SS membership details, conscription records, CVs, personality assessments, and much more. The millions of documents in our database originate primarily from the US National Archives, and we have prepared them for individual research in cooperation with the German Federal Archives.
