Navigating the complexities of tax returns: TaxClaw.AI aims to provide clarity in an often confusing process.
South African AI startup TaxClaw.AI has registered 70,000 users in just three weeks, signaling a growing public appetite for a tool that validates the SARS auto-assessment. TaxClaw.AI has seen rapid user acquisition since its launch, a surge that may attribute to anxiety from the 2026 SARS auto-assessments: some taxpayers receive an SMS confirming a small refund has been deposited, leaving them uncertain if they are entitled to more.
Conversely, others receive automated notices stating they owe SARS money with little explanation, or are summarily informed they must navigate manual eFiling due to the complexity of their tax affairs.
Recognizing this market gap, tech experts Ben Chaud and Meraj Chhaya, alongside 15-year registered tax practitioner Marius Higgs, launched TaxClaw.AI, which allows taxpayers to determine for free if they're eligible for an increase in their tax refunds, or whether they can reduce the amount payable.
The software was not initially designed as a consumer-facing application: “this started as a highly specialized tool used internally by our tax specialists to stress-test internal filing data,” wrote to us Ben Chaud. “But when we saw the sheer volume of ordinary South Africans wondering about auto-assessments, we decided to democratize the technology and make AI analysis completely free for everyone.”
