BBC viewers have been left thrilled that the beloved crime drama is returning to screens very soon.13:14, 22 Jul 2026Updated 13:16, 22 Jul 2026There's good news for fans of the BBC show.‌It's not to wait until the second series of Ludwig airs on BBC One, following its huge success when it first aired back in 2024.‌Actor David Mitchell will reprise his role of John 'Ludwig' Taylor, alongside Anna Maxwell Martin as his sister-in-law, Lucy.‌The series follows John, an awkward, reclusive puzzler, who takes on the identity of his detective twin brother in Cambridge, who has disappeared.Adamant about solving the mystery of his disappearance, he tries to keep his true identity hidden for as long as possible, which doesn't go as planned.‌A synopsis for the second series reads: "Picking up from the end of series one, master puzzle-setter John 'Ludwig' Taylor (David Mitchell) is now a Crime Scene Consultant, working alongside DCI Russell Carter (Dipo Ola), on 'impossible' crimes for the Cambridge Police Authority."No longer having to masquerade as his brother, he's openly more 'Ludwig' than ever - brilliant at solving puzzles but hopeless at everything else."But John’s identical twin brother, James, is still missing, and now that he’s an official employee of the station, John is forbidden from using any police resources to look for his brother or uncover exactly what he was investigating."‌Ludwig creator Mark Brotherhood spoke to Radio Times about what fans can expect to see in series two, as he detailed some new faces joining the show.Characters DC Ethan Cole (Ben Ashenden) and DC Caitlin Sullivan (Rumi Sutton) are new additions to the force, who are none the wiser about the switch between John/James.‌He commented: "The mystery remains. His brother is still missing.
