Managing money as a family is different for every household, but some personal finance habits often strike a chord with people online. A Bengaluru-based couple has now gone viral after sharing the five money rules they follow while balancing demanding careers, raising a toddler and managing a home together. In an Instagram video, Megha and Shubham explained that they both work full-time, have a young daughter and a pet dog, and follow what they describe as a "shared bank account philosophy." They also said their system may not be perfect for everyone, but it has worked well for their family. They spend on their life, not on showing offThe couple began by explaining that they avoid spending money to impress others. Instead, they put their money into things they believe improve their everyday lives."We live in Bangalore. We have a toddler, a dog, two full-time jobs, and one shared bank account philosophy. Here are five money rules that actually work for us."Talking about their first rule, they said, "Rule one, we never spend money to show off, but we spend freely on what genuinely makes us happy. No fancy cars, no branded clothes, no jewelry that just goes into our locker. But our home and the society we live in, we never compromise on that."They added, "Because that's the space we spend our entire day in and the space our daughter grows up in. So we spend on our life, not our image."Travel and family come before buying more thingsThe second rule is about choosing experiences over material purchases.According to the couple, "Rule two, memories over things. Every single time. We take one international trip every summer, multiple staycations throughout the year, and show up to meet our parents whenever they need us, especially for festivals."They said spending on travel and time with family creates lasting memories that they value more than owning expensive possessions.Health is an investment, they sayFitness is another area where the couple refuses to cut costs. They believe staying healthy today can help reduce major medical expenses later in life.Explaining their third rule, they said, "Rule three, fitness is non-negotiable. If we stay fit now, we don't have to spend lakhs on clearing hospital bills later. Clean eating, better products, gym memberships. No compromises. No, we'll start again next month. Our body is the longest investment we'll ever make."Investments first, expenses planned togetherThe couple also stressed the importance of increasing investments every year instead of increasing lifestyle expenses."Rule four, we always invest more than last year. Short-term or long-term goals. Everything has a plan behind it. The number on our investment portfolio matters more than the car standing outside our house."They also shared how they divide household finances. "Rule five, how do we split expenses between us when both of us earn? I handle all the fixed expenses every month. For example, rent, utilities, house help salaries, etc. While I take care of all the miscellaneous expenses, like clearing our credit card bills, groceries, shopping, travel, etc."The couple ended their video by saying, "These aren't perfect rules, but these are ours. And this is what has worked for our family so far. What's your money rule?"
