Francois Cleophas's new book, Cricket and Cape Society, delves into the untold stories of Cape cricket history and how ordinary communities shaped the game against adversity.
Speaking ahead of the launch of his new book, Heathfield sports historian Professor Francois Cleophas said generations of under-resourced Cape communities helped shape the game's enduring legacy.
Cleophas, an Associate Professor of Sport History at Stellenbosch University, said the book's central message is that the people of Cape Town's marginalised communities were not merely victims or spectators in cricket history.
“They were players, organisers, groundsmen, coaches, administrators, and supporters who built their own sporting institutions under extremely difficult circumstances,” he said.
