One question lingers throughout the haze of every NFL August: Did anyone get hurt?Every team simply wants to make it through training camp and preseason healthy. Yet, every year, dozens of players around the league suffer injuries that send the season off the tracks before it even begins. Some losses, of course, are more critical than others.A preseason exercise I’ve enjoyed doing over the years involves assigning a value to Cincinnati Bengals players by using my own Wins Above Replacement (WAR) figure, a stat typically associated with baseball. The WAR ranking of a player filters down to how many more games the team would lose without them in the regular season. That’s not as simple as ranking the best players — not by a long shot. That formula is calculated by the quality of their backup, impact on the scheme, leadership fallout, roster construction, positional importance and, yes, talent level.I’ve ranked them one through eight, as well as by tiers, to categorize the impact of a potential injury. The WAR number is games lost if the player missed all 17 regular-season games. So, who can the Bengals least afford to lose? How Cincinnati Bengals prepare Joe Burrow to exploit NFL defensesRobert MaysTier 1: Season-defining1.
