A dispute over the ownership and operation of a mine in Limpopo has turned deadly, leaving two men dead, including a Gauteng police officer, after a violent confrontation with a group of armed suspects.
Limpopo police have launched a manhunt following the fatal shooting at a mine in Ga-Mahlokwane village near Khubetshane in the Sekhukhune District on Tuesday.
According to police, the violence stems from an ongoing dispute over the mine. The victims had allegedly claimed they held shares in the mining operation and were in possession of a court order directing the mine owner to halt operations.
Police spokesperson Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba said the dispute first surfaced on Friday, July 17, when the group visited the mine and requested a meeting with the owner.
“The victims found two security guards on duty and instructed them to contact the owner. The security guards reportedly contacted their office, but the owner did not arrive, and the group eventually left the premises,” Mashaba said.
