The Lok Sabha on Wednesday passed a resolution suspending Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Kalyan Banerjee for the remainder of the Monsoon Session for allegedly using unparliamentary language against a woman MP, with presiding officer Krishna Prasad Tenneti saying his remarks had "hurt the dignity of the House."Moving the resolution, Tenneti said Banerjee's remarks against the woman member were unbecoming of a parliamentarian and had undermined the dignity of the House. The resolution was subsequently adopted by the Lok Sabha, suspending the TMC MP for the remainder of the ongoing Monsoon Session.The action came amid repeated disruptions in Parliament, with both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha witnessing protests by opposition members. Proceedings in both Houses were adjourned till noon following sloganeering and demonstrations by MPs.The suspension also unfolded against the backdrop of an intensifying confrontation between the opposition and the Centre during the Monsoon Session. Leaders of several opposition parties met in the chamber of Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge on Wednesday to coordinate their strategy on key issues to be raised during the session.Earlier in the day, opposition MPs, including Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav and members of the TMC, staged a protest in Parliament premises dressed in black. The parties termed it a "Black Day" protest, alleging that students and opposition lawmakers were manhandled by security personnel during recent demonstrations.The protest follows Tuesday's Congress march towards Lok Kalyan Marg, during which Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi and several other opposition leaders were detained by Delhi Police before being released later in the day.Speaking on Wednesday, Kharge accused the Centre of acting in an "undemocratic" manner. "I said yesterday itself that this is not a democratic govt. They are functioning like a dictatorship. They do not respect MPs. They harass even those who protest as per rules. BJP-RSS volunteers work among Police without badges. Terrorising students and Congress leaders is what they do indirectly," he said.
