On the 55th anniversary of the restoration of China's lawful seat at the United Nations, UN Resident Coordinator in China Stephen Jackson reaffirmed the significance of the event, highlighting the nation's unique and ongoing contributions as a Global South country to the UN and global affairs.
In an exclusive interview with China Daily, Jackson expressed hope that cooperation between the UN and China would play a greater role in promoting South-South cooperation and safeguarding multilateralism.
On Oct 25, 1971, at the 26th session of the UN General Assembly, Resolution 2758 was adopted with an overwhelming majority. The resolution "decides to restore all its rights to the People's Republic of China and to recognize the representatives of its Government as the only legitimate representatives of China to the United Nations", marking an important milestone in the history of China's participation in the UN.

Jackson hailed this as a "very important moment in the history of the UN and in the history of global affairs", bringing UN representation in line with global realities. He said the resolution introduced a powerful Global South perspective into the Security Council, the highest level of UN leadership, thereby helping to rebalance global power dynamics.
