New York City mayor Zohran Mamdani has doubled down on his calls for Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu to arrested for ‘war crimes’ - but admits he does not have the power to do so himself. In a video posted to social media Tuesday, Mamdani urged the U.S. government to arrest the leader, who he called a “war criminal” and the “architect of a horrific genocide against the Palestinian people”, if he arrives in the country. The new clip comes after president Donald Trump said Netanyahu “will not be arrested, in any way, shape, or form, while in the United States of America” in a Truth Social post on Monday. “Benjamin Netanyahu is a war criminal, the architect of a horrific genocide against the Palestinian people,” the mayor said in the video, which has been liked over 3.2 million times on Instagram and viewed nearly 30 million times. Zohran Mamdani has called Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu the ‘architect of a horrific genocide against the Palestinian people’ (NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani)He went on to cite several examples including the number of amputees in Gaza and a U.N. report alleging Israeli soldiers “deliberately” targeted and killed children. Israel denies allegations of genocide and insists its actions after the October 7 terror attacks are self-defense. “My administration has reviewed every avenue available under applicable law to determine whether New York City could execute the international criminal court’s arrest warrant if Benjamin Netanyahu came here. It is clear that we do not have the independent legal authority to enforce this warrant,” he explained.“The federal government, however, does – and I call on them to join the ICC and execute this warrant,” the mayor added. “And I want to be equally clear: Benjamin Netanyahu is not welcome in New York City, nor is any other war criminal at large.”Mamdani had previously told The New York Times that he is in an “active conversation” with New York’s law department about the the matter, as it is unclear whether he has the authority to order the New York police department (NYPD) to detain a foreign leader.Israel’s ambassador to the United Nations has accused the mayor of antisemitism and supporting Hamas.Donald Trump has said the Israeli leader will ‘never’ be arrested in the U.S. (Reuters)“Zohran Mamdani, ENOUGH. Enough with the blood libels,” he wrote on X in response to the video. “Enough with the attacks on Jewish organizations. Enough with the outreach to the Iranian regime. You were elected to serve New Yorkers, not Hamas’ propaganda. Do your job!”Israel has consistently denied that it is committing a genocide and has called U.N. reports on the matter “grossly distorted”. The International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for Netanyahu in November 2024, accusing him of being “responsible for the war crimes of starvation as a method of warfare and of intentionally directing an attack against the civilian population” in Gaza.He is also accused of “crimes against humanity of murder, persecution, and other inhumane acts from at least 8 October 2023 until at least 20 May 2024.” Netanyahu denies the claims and has called them “antisemitic”.
