DA justice spokesperson Adv. Glynnis Breytenbach has urged Justice Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi to support a separate NPA budget, following Parliament’s recommendation that the authority’s funding model be reviewed.
The Democratic Alliance (DA) has called for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) to be granted financial independence, arguing that a separate budget allocation would allow the prosecuting authority to address capacity constraints, fill vacancies and strengthen its fight against crime.
DA's justice spokesperson and Chied whip Advocate Glynnis Breytenbach said the NPA’s current funding arrangements required urgent review, as the authority continues to face challenges affecting its ability to prosecute cases effectively.
The call comes after Parliament’s Standing Committee on Appropriations recommended that the NPA’s budget arrangements be reviewed, including consideration of whether the authority should receive a separate budget vote.
In its report on the Appropriations Bill, the committee noted that the NPA performs prosecutorial functions distinct from the judicial functions of the courts and the Office of the Chief Justice.
