President Volodymyr Zelensky announced a major shake-up in Ukraine's military leadership on July 21, dismissing Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi and appointing Joint Forces Commander Mykhailo Drapatyi as his successor after nearly a week of nationwide protests demanding the change. Demonstrators had called for Syrskyi's removal following the dismissal of former Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov, arguing that Ukraine needed a new approach to military leadership.
Announcing the decision, Zelensky thanked Syrskyi for his service throughout the full-scale war while explaining that the Armed Forces were entering a new stage. "Oleksandr Syrskyi ensured Ukraine's results in the defense of Kyiv, the Kharkiv counteroffensive, and the Kursk operation. A significant path has been traveled. The defense of Ukraine continues, and every warrior deserves dignified treatment," the president said. He added that together with Drapatyi, acting Defense Minister Yevhenii Khmara, and Deputy Head of the Presidential Office Pavlo Palisa, a reorganization of the General Staff had already been planned.
According to Zelensky, the new military leadership will focus on strengthening Ukraine's long-range strike capabilities, improving protection against Russian aerial attacks, reforming the corps system, and developing a more effective mobilization strategy. The president also revealed that he had met with several senior commanders before making the decision, including Air Assault Forces Commander Oleh Apostol, Chief of the General Staff Andrii Hnatov, and commanders of several leading combat units.
