According to eyewitnesses, the Customs officers were chasing a commercial bus allegedly conveying three bags of smuggled rice when the situation turned deadly.

A resident was shot dead while two other persons sustained gunshot injuries after operatives of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), accompanied by soldiers, allegedly opened fire while pursuing suspected rice smugglers in the Oko-Afo area of Badagry, Lagos State.

SaharaReporters gathered that the incident occurred on Monday evening between 7:30 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. near Oko-Afo Bus Stop beside Oyobo Filling Station.

Residents alleged that the Customs officers abandoned officially approved checkpoints and pursued the commercial bus into a nearby street after its occupants reportedly attempted to evade arrest.
