A software error in New Jersey's Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC) system wrongly registered approximately 6,600 people who had indicated they were not United States citizens as voters, with fewer than 400 of them later casting ballots, Governor Mikie Sherrill has disclosed.
According to Sherrill, the error occurred between June 2023 and June 2024 after applicants seeking driver's licences or state identification cards answered "no" when asked whether they were U.S. citizens. Despite their responses, the MVC's voter registration system erroneously added them to the state's voter rolls.

Announcing the findings on Tuesday, Sherrill said she had immediately ordered an investigation into the incident and directed that all affected registrations be removed from the state's voter rolls.
