Key Facts
—The death. Composer Hany Shenouda died on 20 July 2026 at the Armed Forces Medical Complex in Maadi, Cairo, following a sudden health crisis.
—The legacy. He founded Al-Masryeen in 1977, widely considered Egypt’s first modern pop band, and launched the careers of Amr Diab and Mohamed Mounir.
—The honour. He received Egypt’s State Appreciation Award in the Arts in 2023, one of the country’s highest cultural distinctions.
