Air India will shift its operations at New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) from Terminal 4 to the newly built Terminal 6 in 2028, the airline announced on Monday. As part of the move, the carrier will also open its first flagship Maharaja Lounge at the terminal, expanding its premium airport services in North America. The airline said the shift will bring it closer to several Star Alliance partner airlines operating from Terminal 6, allowing passengers to make same-terminal onward connections across the Americas. The terminal has been selected by 16 international airlines, including Air Canada, Lufthansa, SWISS, ANA, Brussels Airlines and TAP Air Portugal.Flagship Maharaja Lounge planned at Terminal 6The new Maharaja Lounge will span 9,100 square feet in a post-security area overlooking the terminal's commercial concourse. Air India said the lounge will offer its hospitality services to passengers travelling through New York, following the recent opening of its Maharaja Lounge at San Francisco International Airport. Terminal 6 is being developed by JFK Millennium Partners as part of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey's $19 billion redevelopment of JFK Airport. The terminal will open in phases, with the first gates expected to begin operations in 2026 and the full project scheduled for completion in 2028.Current JFK flights to continue from Terminal 4 until shift Air India currently operates daily non-stop flights from JFK Terminal 4 to Delhi and Mumbai using Airbus A350 and Boeing 777 aircraft. The airline said these services will continue from Terminal 4 until the move to Terminal 6 is completed. Air India said the move is part of its ongoing transformation programme, which includes fleet renewal, new cabin products, digital upgrades and investments in customer experience. Since its privatisation in 2022, the airline has placed orders for 600 aircraft and has been expanding its global network and airport services.
