He said Netanyahu was responsible "for the maiming of tens of thousands of children as those who survive undergo amputation without anesthesia. For the targeting of neonatal hospitals and maternity care centers, denying newborns even the chance to live. For the countless people he starved as he blocked food and humanitarian aid from reaching them."Referring to the ICC warrant issued against Netanyahu, Mamdani said, "There is a reason the International Criminal Court issued a warrant for his arrest." He added, "As I've said, I agree with the ICC that Benjamin Netanyahu should be arrested and tried for his crimes as I do for anyone else charged by the ICC."The mayor also said his administration had examined whether New York City had the authority to arrest Netanyahu if he visited the city."My administration has reviewed every avenue available under applicable law to determine whether New York City could execute the International Criminal Court's arrest warrant if Benjamin Netanyahu came here. It is clear that we do not have the independent legal authority to enforce this warrant. The federal government, however, does. And I call on them to join the ICC and execute this warrant," he said.Mamdani ended his remarks by saying, "Benjamin Netanyahu is not welcome in New York City, nor is any other war criminal at large."His latest comments come days after he told The New York Times that his administration was exploring the legal options available under existing law to act on the ICC warrant. The court issued arrest warrants for Netanyahu and other Israeli leaders in 2024 over alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity during and after the October 7, 2023, Hamas attacks. Israel has denied the allegations, while the United States is not a party to the Rome Statute that established the ICC.US President Donald Trump rejected Mamdani's stance, writing on Truth Social that Netanyahu "will not be arrested, in any way, shape, or form" while in the United States. Israel's ambassador to the UN, Danny Danon, also criticised the mayor, accusing him of promoting "Hamas' propaganda". Legal experts have also argued that a New York City mayor has no independent authority to execute an ICC arrest warrant, with such matters falling under the federal government's jurisdiction.
