A Perth-born pediatrician accused of fighting for ISIS “can rot in jail” a minister said after it was revealed he was alive despite being thought dead for almost a decade.Tareq Kamleh, dubbed “Dr Jihad”, joined the Islamist militant group at its peak last decade. His family and authorities believed he was killed in the bloody Raqqa siege in Syria in 2017.However, The Australian reported on Wednesday that he was among 13 Australian men locked up in an Iraqi prison hoping to be repatriated. An Albanese government spokesperson told NewsWire that Kamleh would not get any help from Canberra.“The government has not and will not provide any assistance to any Australian who made the horrific choice to join a dangerous terrorist organisation,” the spokesperson said.“We’ve been very clear that for some individuals in this cohort, returning to Australia would mean facing the full force of the law.“The safety of the Australian community is this government’s highest priority.”In a morning media appearance, cabinet minister Clare O’Neil, who previously headed Home Affairs, said she could not fathom “how someone who’s a trained medical professional, who’s trained to help people stay alive ends up in a death cult”.“As far as I’m concerned, that person can rot in jail,” she told Seven’s Sunrise. The Australian revealed Kamleh’s status after viewing Iraqi court documents, with the paper reporting a brief published by the Supreme Judicial Council of Iraq at the end of June outlined his capture, role within ISIS’s “health department” and efforts to flee from the crumbling caliphate. The Australian Federal Police has a warrant out for his arrest for terrorism offences.Coming weeks after 10 women linked to ISIS returned to Australia from Syria with their children, the opposition has called on Labor to make sure Kamleh does not return.“This is a person who chose a caliphate of hate over the Australian people,” opposition foreign affairs spokesman Ted O’Brien told Sky News.“He is against our country. We don’t want him back in this country.”He said Kamleh “betrayed his profession” and “encouraged other people to go and kill”.“This is not a doctor who saves lives, this is a doctor which encourages death,” Mr O’Brien said.“We don’t want him here.”Read related topics:Perth
