Sudan's war isn't just within its borders; it's now also over US chemical weapons claims

Sudan, which has been drenched in a very violent civil war since 2023, has denounced a new set of US sanctions related to the war.

The US sanctions rejected by the Northern African country are based on claims that Sudan used chemical weapons sometime during its ongoing conflict.

Sudan claimed that the sanctions were politically motivated and lacked reliable proof.

Sudan's Foreign Ministry said in a statement that Washington violated the Chemical Weapons Convention processes by relying on unproven assertions rather than using globally recognized investigation systems.

The new sanctions went into effect on July 20 after the United States determined that Sudan had not completed the requirements necessary under the Chemical and Biological Weapons Control and Warfare Elimination Act of 1991 to avoid further penalties.
