Colombia’s Ecopetrol has become known as Latin America’s greenest national oil company (NOC). The company, 88.5% of which is state-owned, rolled out ambitious emissions reduction goals and invested heavily in low-carbon business lines following the 2022 election of President Gustavo Petro, who promoted clean energy development and supported a fossil fuel phaseout. The recent election of the right-wing independent Abelardo de la Espriella, known as "El Tigre" — who will be inaugurated as president on Aug. 7 and who decried Petro’s policies as “economic suicide” — could mean a deeper focus on oil and gas development, although opposition to a policy reversal could be fierce.
