MANILA, Philippines — Amid worsening tensions with China in the West Philippine Sea, President Marcos on Tuesday reaffirmed the mandate of the Armed Forces of the Philippines to defend the country, with his appointment of Gen. Antonio Nafarrete as the new chief of staff.

“The command entrusted to you is great, but the purpose is even greater: to safeguard our people, defend every inch of our land and waters, and secure the future of our Republic,” Marcos said in his speech during a turnover ceremony in Camp Aguinaldo where Nafarrete formally assumed command of the Armed Forces from retiring Gen. Romeo Brawner Jr.

During the ceremony, Marcos conferred a fourth star on Nafarrete, promoting him to the rank of general. Before his appointment as the military’s 61st chief of staff, Nafarrete headed the Philippine Army, with the rank of lieutenant general.
