Tofan is a respected businessman, but some believe his lack of political experience could hamper his reform agenda
Moldova’s parliament formally approved businessman Vasile Tofan as prime minister on Tuesday evening, filling a vacancy created after the previous government collapsed following a scandal at a state institution.
The change in government comes as Moldova is engaged in sensitive negotiations over EU accession. While Tofan is widely respected in business circles, some critics question whether his lack of political experience could hinder his ability to deliver reforms.
“Tofan appears to be a competent, determined person, with intolerance for corruption and without populist rhetoric,” said Sergiu Tofilat, head of Moldovan civil society group Community Watchdog. “His nomination to the position of prime minister comes against the backdrop of a crisis of confidence in the ruling party, after multiple scandals.”
