Civil society organisations, Public Interest SA and Corruption Watch, have demanded action to be taken against businessman Hangwani Maumela, who is implicated in the looting of Tembisa Hospital.
More than R326 million in luxury assets linked to businessman Hangwani Maumela have now been forfeited to the state, but civil society organisations say the real test of accountability is whether criminal prosecutions will follow.
Despite being implicated in the looting of more than R2 billion from Tembisa Hospital and the loss of a vast property and luxury vehicle portfolio, Maumela remains a free man — a reality that has prompted renewed calls for authorities to pursue those allegedly responsible, regardless of their political connections.
Public Interest SA and Corruption Watch have urged government to ensure that justice is applied equally and that Maumela is treated no differently from any other South African facing serious allegations of corruption.
Maumela is the nephew of President Cyril Ramaphosa by previous marriage.
