RIYADH: The Saudi mathematics team won six awards — three silver medals and three bronze — at the 67th International Mathematical Olympiad, in Shanghai, China, which boasted the participation of 666 students representing 117 countries.
Yousef Ayman Bakhit, from the Royal Commission Yanbu; Abdulsalam Abdullah Al-Sulami, from the General Administration of Education in the Madinah Region; and Abdulelah Mohammed Al-Saqqaf, from the General Administration of Education in Jeddah Governorate, each claimed silver.
Elias Shaker Al-Faraj and Abdullah Tareq Al-Amer, from the General Administration of Education in the Eastern Region; and Fares Mohammed Al-Kunhal, from the General Administration of Education in the Riyadh Region, won bronze medals.
It was the Saudi mathematics team’s best performance at the IMO since its debut in 2004, raising the Kingdom’s overall tally in the competition to 88 international awards, which includes 15 silver medals, 51 bronze medals, and 22 certificates of honor.
The achievement followed a year-long program of intensive preparation and training by the students under the supervision of the King Abdulaziz and His Companions Foundation for Giftedness and Creativity, known as Mawhiba, in partnership with the Ministry of Education and as part of the Mawhiba International Olympiad Program.
