California: India didn't invent the microprocessor. It didn't create the personal computer. Nor did it build the internet. Yet, India became the trusted technology partner for enterprises worldwide, helping them digitise their businesses. That journey created one of the world's largest IT industries, generated millions of high-quality jobs, and established India as the global leader in technology services.AI presents an opportunity that is even larger. But only if we recognise where the greatest value will be created.Much of today's global conversation remains fixated on the race to build ever-larger foundation models. India does not need to outspend the US or China in the quest for the world's largest AI model. However, it would be a serious mistake to conclude that India can consume frontier models built elsewhere.To become a global leader in AI deployment, India must invest in frontier AI research. Not necessarily to win the race for the largest model, but to develop the expertise required to understand, evaluate, adapt, fine-tune and improve models that will power tomorrow's applications.That learning curve is indispensable. A focused national AI R&D effort can provide India with deep technical understanding of emerging breakthroughs while also building sovereign capabilities essential for national security, defence and critical infrastructure. The much larger commercial opportunity, however, lies elsewhere.India can become the world's AI deployment hub, the country enterprises turn to for integrating AI securely, efficiently and at scale.Every major organisation around the world now faces similar questions. How do we integrate AI into thousands of business processes? How do we protect proprietary data and IP? How do we redesign workflows around AI-native operations rather than automate existing ones? How do we comply with evolving regulations while delivering measurable business value?These are not model-building problems. They are systems engineering, integration and business transformation problems. And few countries are better positioned than India to solve them.India combines the world's largest software engineering workforce with decades of enterprise IT experience, DPI, cost-effective innovation and domain expertise across banking, healthcare, manufacturing, agriculture, retail and government. These are precisely the capabilities that enabled India to become the world's software services leader. They can now make India the world's AI deployment hub.As enterprises accelerate AI adoption, a new concern is rising to the boardroom: trust. Business leaders are asking not only which model performs best but who controls their data, workflows and intellectual property. Trust is becoming as important as intelligence. This plays directly to India's strengths.The country has earned global credibility by operating DPI for public benefit rather than private extraction. It's a democracy with a mature technology ecosystem, a strong rule-of-law framework, and thousands of AI engineers working at the frontier of global innovation who have earned the confidence of enterprise decision-makers worldwide.India has also taken important early steps toward AI governance through data localisation policies, AI audit frameworks and algorithmic accountability initiatives. These efforts should now evolve into a regulatory framework that simultaneously preserves trust and encourages innovation. Striking this balance will position India as the world's preferred destination for AI deployment, where global AI innovations are transformed into real-world solutions at unprecedented scale.Thirty years ago, enterprises came to India to digitise their businesses. Over the next decade, they can come to India to reinvent their businesses with AI. The opportunity extends far beyond software services. It encompasses AI- transformation consulting, enterprise integration, AI operations, cybersecurity, governance, compliance, model orchestration, domain-specific AI platforms and managed AI services.Collectively, these could create a trillion-dollar AI deployment industry over the coming decade while generating millions of high-value jobs. Capturing this opportunity will require coordinated action:Enterprises must move beyond isolated AI pilots and redesign entire business processes around human-AI collaboration.IT services companies must evolve from supplying engineering talent to delivering measurable AI-driven business outcomes.Startups should focus less on generic chatbots and more on solving complex enterprise problems with deep domain expertise.Policymakers should continue investing in sovereign compute, trusted data infrastructure, cybersecurity, open AI ecosystems and advanced AI research, while creating regulatory frameworks that accelerate responsible innovation.India has done this before. The country became the world's back office during the software revolution. Now it can become the world's AI transformation partner.
