Flights from the airport are gradually resuming after being grounded but passengers have been urged to check the status of their flights before travelling. Firefighters remain at the scene.‌French President Emmanuel Macron paid tribute to the two firefighters killed in a post on X, writing: "Two firefighters lost their lives while responding to a fire in Mérignac.‌"I extend to their families, to their loved ones, and to the firefighters of France the condolences, the gratitude, and the support of the Nation."Laurent Nuñez wrote on X: "The Nation bows before their courage and their commitment to protecting the French people."France has been gripped by a deadly heatwave in recent weeks that has resulted in wildfires, a public health crisis and more than 2,000 deaths to date.Article continues belowFirefighters are also battling a separate blaze in the Var department in the south-east of the country.Nearly 600 firefighters are tackling a field fire near Ponteves that has burned around 350 hectares.
