Traveling outside of the US means figuring out a fundamental question: How are you going to pay once you’re there? We recommend using credit cards, which let you avoid having lots of cash on your person, often come with purchase and fraud protection and generally offer travel rewards or cash back for your spending. The key question then becomes which credit card, or cards, you should bring with you outside of the country. Some of the best credit cards charge a fee for any foreign transactions, so the first rule should be to bring a card that doesn’t.

Over the years, I have perfected my card strategy for traveling abroad, and I now have it down to four cards I take with me whenever I leave the US. Last year, I traveled to every inhabited continent except Africa, and these are the four credit cards I brought on every trip, with each dedicated to a specific use:

Dining, hotels, flights and lounge access: Chase Sapphire Reserve®

Transit, car rentals and general travel: Chase Ink Business Preferred® Credit Card
