Officials of the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), Coimbatore Branch Office, seized over 4.9 kilograms of non-hallmarked gold jewellery items during a search and seizure operation at two jewellery shops in Big Bazaar Street, Tiruchi, on Tuesday, for violating the mandatory hallmarking provisions under the BIS Act, 2016.The raid was conducted by two teams from the BIS Coimbatore Branch Office led by Directors S. Rino John and G. Vinith Kumar.During the inspection, officials found gold jewellery being offered for sale without the mandatory Hallmarking Unique Identification (HUID) 6-digit alphanumeric number, which is required for the sale of gold jewellery in the country.According to the press note, the seized stock is about 4.9 kg of gold jewellery worth ₹7.35 crore. The agency said further action has been initiated against the establishment under the provisions of the BIS Act, 2016. The offence is punishable with imprisonment up to one year or a fine not less than ₹1 lakh but may extend up to five times the value of goods or articles produced or sold or offered to be sold or affixed or applied with a Standard Mark or both as per Section 29 of the BIS Act, 2016.The agency advised consumers that, in case they come across such instances, complaints can be made through the BIS Care mobile app. Published - July 21, 2026 08:52 pm IST
