A new AI model from Chinese firm Moonshot AI has had its "DeepSeek moment," causing major disruption in the global AI market and spooking Western developers. Kimi K3 is an open-weight model, with 2.8 trillion parameters, making it the largest open-weight AI model ever released. Internal benchmarks have it competing with models like GPT 5.5 and Claude Opus 4.8, and Arena.ai awarded it the number one spot in its Frontend Code Arena test, even beating out Claude Fable 5.It doesn't win every benchmark, and reports that suggest Kimi K3 is much slower than frontier models from companies like Anthropic and OpenAI. All benchmarked results are drawn from API access, too, so can't be verified until Moonshot releases the weights on July 27.
