The Andhra Pradesh Forest Department is making arrangements to shift two trained Kumki elephants — Jayanth and Abhimanyu — from the Palamaner camp to the Parvathipuram-Manyam district as part of measures to mitigate the growing human-elephant conflict in the region. The move comes following directions from Deputy Chief Minister and Minister for Forests and Environment K. Pawan Kalyan.The jumbo Jayanth, has undergone specialised training at the State’s Nanniyal elephant camp, while Abhimanyu, brought from Karnataka, will be relocated from the Musalimadugu camp, near Palamaner, to the Guchchimi camp in Parvathipuram-Manyam district.According to the Forest Department, both the elephants have extensive experience in controlling wild elephants and have successfully participated in six major operations.Most recently, Jayanth and Abhimanyu played a key role in capturing a solitary male wild elephant near Palamaner. They have been selected for deployment in the Manyam district based on their coordination and proven operational performance.Officials said: “The move is intended to provide immediate relief to residents of villages along the Andhra Pradesh-Odisha border, where herds of wild elephants frequently enter into human habitation, damaging crops and property, and posing a threat to local communities.”Forest officials say that recurring elephant incursions in Parvathipuram-Manyam district to habitat fragmentation, shrinking forest cover, and shortage of food and water in the neighbouring forest areas.
