The family that built it is selling. The employees who own a piece of it are keeping a meaningful stake in the deal. The purchase fits a broader move in terms of where investment capital is flowing. A hands-on business selling everyday supplies to the people who keep the West working. Gregg’s customers are energy companies, farmers, builders, truckers, mechanics and municipalities, a base so broad it hinges on more than oil.Get the latest headlines, breaking news and columns.By signing up you consent to receive the above newsletter from Postmedia Network Inc.A welcome email is on its way. Please try again“Gregg’s is a high-quality business with a strong market position, resilient cash-flow profile and a differentiated customer value proposition,” Erson Olivan, a managing partner in Brookfield’s private equity group, said in the news release announcing the deal.Gregg has held its ground on a broad product range, fast fulfillment and hands-on service. The kind of essential-service Brookfield’s private equity arm, with about $160 billion under management, likes to own.The company’s roots run deeper than the deal price suggests. The business traces back to the late 1950s, when founder Roy Gregg sold industrial cleaning products out of the trunk of the family car around Edmonton. It moved into a commercial space in 1968, the year it counts as its founding, and grew into an Edmonton mainstay that has outlasted boom and bust to become one of Western Canada’s biggest industrial suppliers. The real money could be in what’s next. With Canada committing to energy security and billions moving into LNG and pipelines, Gregg sits directly downstream of every major project the West breaks ground on.Gary Gregg, speaking for the family and the company, tied the sale to a legacy he wanted to protect. “We are proud of the business we have built with our employees and the culture that has defined Gregg for more than 58 years,” Gregg said in the release, calling Brookfield “the ideal partner for Gregg’s next chapter.”The deal is expected to close by the end of 2026, subject to regulatory approvals and customary conditions.Brookfield says it plans to back Gregg’s next phase of growth, and for a company already running more than two dozen locations across three provinces, with an owner of that scale behind it, the West’s toolbox is only getting bigger.
