Please try again“This is not the direction we wanted to take,” the carrier said in an email to customers last week. “While these recent market shifts have stalled our progress in removing the surcharge, our commitment remains unchanged. We plan to remove it entirely when market conditions allow.”Porter’s temporary fuel surcharge was implemented for its reward flight redemptions on bookings to offset global aviation fuel prices that had doubled. The airline said its goal was to remove this surcharge when the price of fuel reaches levels seen at the beginning of the year.“We truly hoped our next update would confirm that full removal,” Porter said. It added that as the global oil market has since experienced unexpected and sharp price increases from last month, the fee was readjusted back to ensure the airline can continue offering the full value of reward points during this period of rising jet fuel prices.The readjusted $40 fee only applies to new VIPorter reward bookings made as of July 17 and all other existing bookings remain fully protected at their original rates. Porter still doesn’t add a fuel surcharge for regular bookings made without redeeming points.WestJet Airlines, which reduced the fuel surcharge applied to companion vouchers from $60 in April to $40 per round trip or one-way fare in June, said the fee remains the same for its passengers.It adjusted the surcharge last month to reflect the movement in fuel costs and “the airline’s ongoing effort to balance affordability with the realities of the current operating environment,” it said.The carrier noted that surcharges are subject to change in either direction depending on fuel price trends, as it continues to monitor market conditions and adjust its approach as conditions evolve.Air Canada, which added a $50 fuel surcharge for flights through Air Canada Vacations beginning April 6, said it still does not have a specific fuel surcharge on tickets and instead manages fuel costs through its regular fare structure.It noted that fares continually fluctuate in response to a variety of factors, including demand, competition and costs.Transat A.T. Inc. was the first major Canadian airline to add a surcharge in March for flights to Europe and in April implemented a carrier surcharge of $50 per passenger for Transat South package bookings.
