A family of Ukrainian refugees is facing tragedy after their 16-year-old son was disfigured in a horrific car crash that has left him hospitalized for a month.Mark Kurylenko's family recently moved from Ukraine to Oregon through the Uniting for Ukraine humanitarian program to flee the war with Russia. They had been successfully rebuilding their lives in Clackamas County just south of Portland, joining the Church of Grace in the city where they found camaraderie and began integrating with the community.Things were going well until June 21, when Kurylenko was in the backseat of a car with friends going through an intersection in Vancouver, Washington, when the driver lost control of the vehicle, swerved and rolled over.Although the 16-year-old had his seat belt on, he suffered catastrophic injuries. His mother, Nadia Kurylenko, told KOIN through a friend named Paulina Perju who translated: 'His nose flipped all the way to his eyes.' 'His finger was basically amputated. His ear, they put together 21 pieces,' the mother also said through her friend and translator, whom she met through church.According to a GoFundMe set up to help the Kurylenkos pay for their son's extensive medical treatment, the teenager 'sustained severe trauma to his body and face.'The injuries included losing a 'large portion of tissue from his knee... a fractured skull, severe facial injuries, [and] a nearly detached nose.' He has since regained consciousness, but he has been hospitalized for a monthGruesome photos of Kurylenko in the hospital show him with a stitched-up ear, an enormous purple and red bruise covering the entire right side of his face and a bloodied-up nose and mouth while he lay in bed with a neck brace.After the crash, the teenager was in a coma for days. He has since regained consciousness but still has a long way to go before recovering, according to the family. He will need reconstructive surgery on his nose and ear, but the procedures are not fully covered by the family's insurance, which has already reached its coverage limit, according to the GoFundMe. The Kurylenkos 'have been told that further treatment cannot move forward without payment,' the fundraising page said.Nadia, the teen's mother, told KOIN she is 'very frustrated' by the complicated medical care the family has had to navigate through a language barrier. The next steps in his treatment will involve consulting various specialists, going through referrals and undergoing additional surgeries. All the while, Nadia and her husband will have to continue figuring out their lives in a new country while also caring for their other three children. Friends and family described Kurylenko as kind, faithful and someone who was able to quickly make new friends after moving to the US. That’s definitely a testimony of how he was kind to other people and his friends,' the teen's mother told KOIN. As of Tuesday morning, the GoFundMe had raised $3,700 of its $25,000 goal. The fundraising page concluded with the bible verse Galatians 6:2: 'Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.'The Church of Grace has also established a separate fundraiser to assist the family.
