Bharathiar University is looking forward to establishing an exclusive hostel facility for transgender students, anticipating patronage.At present, there are a couple of transgender students pursuing post-graduation in the university. The university has learnt that they faced an ordeal in finding private accommodation outside the campus. Landlords are wary of renting out their buildings, they have been complaining.An exclusive hostel for transgenders would prompt other higher educational institutions to follow suit, Registrar R. Rajavel said. The proposal for the exclusive building for transgender students will be placed before the Syndicate, he added.In Coimbatore district, Kongunadu Arts and Science College was the first to make the campus environment friendly for transgender students and faculty.The college management waives tuition fee for transgender students and has established restrooms for them.Last year, L. Beautlyna, Assistant Professor of Commerce in the college, was honoured with Trans Achievers Award 2025 by Chennai-based Born2Win Social Welfare Trust for being the first transgender faculty with Ph.D. qualification in the State.Nevertheless, in general, higher educational institutions, according to academics, are not decisive when it comes to implementing the framework for equity for transgenders envisaged in National Education Policy 2020.
