Tiruchi City Corporation is set to commission its new sewage treatment plant (STP) at Panjapur by August, with the final phase of works currently under way. The new STP is being established under the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) 2.0 scheme at an estimated cost of ₹233.87 crore. The facility is coming up on a corporation-owned site located along the Tiruchi–Madurai National Highway.The project has been proposed to meet the city’s future sewage treatment requirements. Once completed, the new plant will replace the existing facility and will have the capacity to treat 100 million litres per day (MLD) of sewage collected from 50 wards in the city, including Wards 1 to 39, 42 to 44, 48 to 54 and 59.Construction of the facility began in March 2024, and the civic body aims to complete the project by August. Officials have been conducting frequent inspections to monitor progress, and the contractor has been instructed to further expedite the works.Mayor M. Anbazhagan said the Corporation had temporarily put new house service connections on hold to facilitate the commissioning of the plant. He said key imported machinery is expected to arrive on site by the end of July, while work to extend the sewage pumping main to the Panjapur plant is nearing completion. Trial runs of the new facility will be conducted after the machinery is installed, he added.Currently, a 58.64 MLD sewage treatment plant, established under the National River Conservation Plan (NRCP), is functioning at the site using the Waste Stabilisation Pond method. While the existing facility occupies about 274 acres, the new STP is being constructed on around 20 acres.Following the commissioning of the new plant, the Corporation plans to dismantle the existing facility and utilise the land for other development projects.
