Silver Jaguar XJ220 parked by the coast.

Ian Callum has redesigned the Jaguar XJ220 but shown only half of it. Here’s what we know about the reworked supercar, and why teasing it works so well.Callum’s studio has put out a single image of a reworked XJ220, and it’s already all over motoring news feeds despite giving away almost nothing. There’s no front view, no interior shot and no word on what might power it, yet the picture has done more for the studio’s profile this month than most full car launches manage. We’ve seen the back of the car and its outline, plus a handful of confident quotes from the designer himself. Callum’s studio calls it a “portfolio project,” which in plain terms means a design exercise rather than something you’ll ever be able to order. Even so it looks genuinely good. The classic XJ220 silhouette is still recognisable, just pulled tighter, with shorter overhangs, a sharper tail, new wheels and a lower light bar running across the back. Callum describes it as “a contemporary interpretation of one of the most iconic supercars ever made,” and on the evidence released so far that’s a reasonable claim to make. The more interesting story here probably isn’t the car itself though. It’s why a single unfinished photo can generate more buzz than an entire new model launch.
