FIFA has launched a disciplinary investigation into Argentina following violent scenes after the 2026 World Cup final against Spain and a separate incident involving a political banner displayed after the semi-final against England.
Spain secured a 1-0 victory after extra time at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on Sunday to win the World Cup. The celebrations ended with confrontations involving several players and members of Argentina's coaching staff.
FIFA said its Disciplinary Committee has appointed a Disciplinary and Ethics Prosecutor to examine potential breaches of the FIFA Disciplinary Code arising from the post-match incidents.
The investigation leaves open the possibility of suspensions for players or officials found responsible, while the Argentine Football Association could also face financial penalties.
