CEBU CITY, Philippines — The Binaliw Sanitary Landfill in Cebu City remains in “critical condition” and at risk of catching fire, months after a garbage collapse at the site killed 36 people and injured 18 others.
This was disclosed by Environmental Management Bureau (EMB) Director Michael Matias during a Senate hearing on solid waste management on Monday, July 20, 2026.
Matias named Binaliw as one of five landfills nationwide facing the risk. The others are in Navotas, Rizal, Davao City, and Pangasinan.
