The EFF argues that preventable failures in Operation Prosper must be addressed through better training, equipment and oversight before more lives are lost, writes Carl Niehaus.
As an EFF member of parliament serving on both the Portfolio Committee on Defence and Military Veterans and the Joint Standing Committee on Defence, I extend together with all the members of my party, the Economic Freedom Fighters, our most heartfelt condolences to the families, loved ones, and colleagues of the two brave South African National Defence Force soldiers who tragically lost their lives while carrying out their sacred duties as part of Operation Prosper.
I would have preferred to refer in person to the names of the two brave soldiers who lost their lives. But it is fully understood that until all their next of kin and loved ones have been informed, their names cannot yet be made public. Not being able to mention their names should not detract from the very sincere sympathy and condolences that we express about their passing. These two courageous soldiers made the ultimate sacrifice in the service of our nation.
They died protecting our mineral resources while fighting against the scourge of illegal mining that destroys our environment and communities. Their deaths are a stark reminder of the dangers faced by our security forces daily and the high price paid by those who stand on the frontlines of this critical battle. My thoughts and prayers, and those of the entire EFF, are with their grieving families during this time of unimaginable loss.
