Representatives of "Democratic Bulgaria" said their parliamentary group will decide whether to support the deployment of US tanker aircraft at Bulgaria's Bezmer Air Base only after receiving detailed information from the government and the country's security institutions. Speaking to reporters, Ivaylo Mirchev and Bozhidar Bozhanov stressed that such a decision requires a thorough assessment of its strategic and security implications.
Mirchev described the United States as one of Bulgaria's key strategic partners but argued that lawmakers first need a full explanation of the reasons behind the proposed redeployment. “Before we vote on Prime Minister Radev's proposal to return American air tankers to Bulgaria, we must receive full information from the Prime Minister himself, from the Minister of Defense and from the Bulgarian services,” he said.
According to Mirchev, Parliament should not only examine why the aircraft are expected to return to Bezmer but also discuss the broader consequences for Bulgaria's national security. He added that the country's position on developments in the Middle East should remain aligned with its European partners. “When it comes to Iran, when it comes to the Middle East, we should follow the common European position or at least participate in its formation, and not have an individual one,” he said.
