Vale led the drags, falling about 1.4%, with Banco do Brasil down 1.6% as mining and one big state bank weighed.

Petrobras, Itaú Unibanco and Santander Brasil bucked the softness, rising 0.6%, 0.8% and 1.35% respectively.

The real firmed 0.41% to R$5.09 per dollar, extending its recovery from a 52-week dollar high near 5.59.
