The discovery was made by Dr Stewart Ainsworth, who used his smartphone light to identify an abrupt change in masonry within a dark corridor. Researchers grew certain of the wall's medieval origin, indicating it survived later 18th-century construction of the court complex. The substantial wall, nearly three metres high, is believed to be part of a bridge that once cut across a deep ditch surrounding the castle's inner ward.
