Both sides appeared adamant it had been a very positive conversation.
Andy Burnham said during his call with Donald Trump, believed to be his first with a foreign leader after becoming Prime Minister, that he’d congratulated him on his successful hosting of the World Cup, agreed England had an “excellent” tournament and invited him to visit Manchester.
For his part, Trump said he’d had a “very good conversation” and said he believed while Burnham had a “big job” ahead of him, “he will be able to do it and, of course, the USA will be there to help!”

He said the two leaders would be “meeting in the not too distant future for topics of mutual interest”.
