In the night leading up to Sunday, Microsoft began distributing an unscheduled update for Windows 11. It is intended to specifically fix performance issues that the manufacturer has confirmed on some Dell computers.
The update, with KB entry KB5121767, brings Windows 11 25H2 or 24H2 to operating system build numbers 26200.8894 and 26100.8894 respectively. According to the Microsoft release announcement, it exclusively addresses the performance problem that Microsoft admitted to on Thursday night.
After installing the update preview from June of this year, yellow exclamation marks appeared in Device Manager for the “Intel Innovation Platform Framework Processor Participant” driver on a limited number of Dell computers. In some cases, this led to performance degradation, increased power consumption, or changes in system behavior on affected systems, Microsoft explained the effects.
Driver as the Trigger
As Microsoft explained, the problem stems from an incompatibility between the Intel driver and the new Windows USB-C Connection Manager interface introduced with the June update preview. Consequently, Microsoft had stopped the distribution of the July Windows security update on affected machines. According to the current release announcement, these can now install the update after all, as the unscheduled update contains fixes for the problem.
